Tour 2 - Carrickfergus Castle & Glens of Antrim
A short drive from Belfast the first port of call on this tour is Carrickfergus Castle. There are few buildings in Ireland with such well chronicled and fascinating long history as Carrickfergus Castle. It appears first in the official English records in 1210 when the notorious King John laid siege to it and took control of what was then Ulster's premier strategic garrison. In 1760 it was captured and held by French invaders under the command of Thurot.

Later, it served as a prison and during the Napoleonic Wars was heavily defended; six guns on the east battery remain of the twenty-two that were used in 1811. For a century it remained a magazine and armoury before being transferred to the Government on 1928 for preservation as an ancient monument.The history of the castle is told in an audio-visual presentation and brought to life by a cast of faithfully recreated characters from 800 years ago.

From Carrickfergus the tour will continue along the scenic Antrim Coast Road. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty where breathtaking and rugged coastline merges into the romantic landscape of deep silent glens and lush forest parks.

As you drive through the Glens of Antrim, you can visit Glenariff Forest Park where you can relax and enjoy the tranquility and leafy woodland.
